2006 VACATION |
|
After
spending the weekend of
Curtis' Navy graduation in
the Chicago area, we
ventured forth to Appleton,
Wisconsin, around Lake
Michigan to Mackinac Island,
on to Joy & Don's, and
finally back home. |
We stayed at the LaQuinta Suites in Appleton, Wisconsin. Nice hotel! Photo Op! We stopped near this lighthouse on the north shore of Lake Michigan, in Manistique. The Mackinac Bridge from a scenic overlook just outside St. Ignace, Michigan. Driving south over the Mackinac Bridge. Pam at the Shepler's Ferry dock before leaving for Mackinac Island. This is the view from the ferry arriving at Mackinac Island. Here's Pam on the balcony of our room at the Main Street Inn. Here's a shot looking down Main Street to our left ... ... and looking to our right! Early Tuesday morning we woke to the sound of the first ferry arriving at the island. All transportation on Mackinac Island is provided by horses or bicycles. Charlie and Tom were the ones who pulled our sightseeing tour wagon. We passed the world famous Grand Hotel, featured in the movie "Somewhere in Time". First stop on the tour was the carriage museum. An optional stop on the tour was a butterfly conservatory. "Arch Rock" is one of the stops. You can see the highway far below. The view from Arch Rock is tremendous! Fort Macknac is the major stop on the tour. Looking down on downtown from the fort above. A view of the harbor from the fort. ... and a view of the Mackinac Bridge. Fort Mackinac was famous for its research in the medical field -- in the 1800's. This plaque commemorates some of the achievements. One of the fort's towers features animatronic figures simulating battle conditions. The Fort's museum highlights the past industry on Mackinac Island. One of the three-horse hitches on the high ground portion of the tour. A view of the Fort from the downtown area. One of the beautiful houses on Mackinac Island. Several of these grand estates have been converted to Inns or Bed and Breakfasts. One of the magnificent buildings facing the harbor -- St. Anne's Catholic Church. Pam getting her feet wet in Lake Michigan. The fabulous Mission Point resort. Mark & Pam near the end of a beautiful day. The seagulls were not very afraid of the tourists. Pam waving from our 3rd floor room at the Main Street Inn. Our room had a small kitchinette area. Pam standing in the sitting room. Mark sitting in the sitting room -- hey, that's what it's for! The lobby of the Main Street Inn. On Wednesday morning, we took a walk to view some of the side streets. One more of the beautiful private homes on Mackinac Island. Many of these homes go for $900,000 or more ... if they are ever sold. Many are passed down for generations. Pam on the beautiful boardwalk. More of the houses on the west side of the Island. Mark on the boardwalk, with the Mackinac Bridge in the background. This is another of the Bed and Breakfasts ... the Metivier Inn. We left Mackinac Island and traveled to Don & Joy's. Sydney showed me how she plays her piano. Kaitlyn shows off her newly-painted GREEN room! Joy shows off the decorating in Sydney's newly-painted PINK room! Sydney strikes a princess pose. Kaitlyn & Joy are boogie-ing on the deck. Granny, Joy, Kaitlyn and Sydney. Sydney, Pam, Mark, Joy, and Kaitlyn. Breakfast at Bob Evans before we leave on Friday. Saturday morning ... last day of the trip ... ready to head for home.
